The subtitle to Cuatro, a relatively new South Loop restaurant, is "Cocina Nuevo Latino," or "New Mexican Cooking." And this smart little restaurant isn't pulling any punches when it comes to laying some exciting cocina out there.

The Reader Sophisticated nuevo Latino comfort food in a sophisticated space. Appetizers looked so tempting it was hard to make our choices, but the vegetarian ceviche was a good pick: crunchy hearts of palm, mushrooms, asparagus, avocado, and pico de gallo in a bright-tasting citrus dressing.
Center Stage With garage doors for windows, Cuatro looks more than a little like a made-over auto-repair shop. Step inside this Caribbean-inspired hotspot and you'll find plenty of food and music to get your engine running.

Back when you could still describe the southern tip of the South Loop as up and coming, restaurant developers Jerry Kleiner and Matt O'Malley were the only guys with the stones to set up shop. But suddenly, their pioneering eateries (Gioco, Opera, Chicago Firehouse) have some real competition, the newest of which is Cuatro.
